Self-Publishing – At The Eve Of Launch

Self-Publishing is a series of posts that follows my desperate attempts at developing, writing, and eventually self-publishing my own book.  Follow along if you dare, or if you’re just really bored.

After The EventThe Remnants

I’ve talked about the idea , the hook, how I was going to publish, how many books I was going to write, announced the title, revealed the cover, debuted the trailer, and introduced my website.  The only thing left to do is to release the damn thing!

This journey has been a long one, and some of you have been riding along with me since the beginning over 2 years ago!!  I just want to thank everyone for their support, advice and interest.  As every writer knows there were days when it felt like everything I put down on paper was gold, than there were days when it felt like I was just puking on the page.  Some days publishing seemed possible, others, nothing more than a pipe dream. Yet through it all I continued to write and read your encouragement and advice until I finally got to this point.

I’ll be releasing another post here shortly when the books go live so you all will be the first to know, but before things got crazy I just wanted to say thanks!

Self Publishing – The Website

As we get closer and closer to the release of my first two books After The Event & The RemnantsI wanted to share my author website with you all!

For my website I choose Wix.com.

I know next to nothing when it comes to designing a website so I used one of their pre-made templates, and modified a few things with their easy to use tools.

And here it is!

Self-Publishing – The Trailer

Self-Publishing is a series of posts that follows my desperate attempts at developing, writing, and eventually self-publishing my own book. Follow along if you dare, or if you are just really bored.

One of the ways I decided I could stand out from the crowd was to develop a book trailer to give readers a taste of the basic premise of the book.  Now luckily I have already dabbled in the world of book trailers.

When my son was born I purchased a camcorder along with Corel Videostudio so that I could record his “firsts” and burn them onto cd’s to send to friends and family.  At that time Amazon Studios would occasionally have contests where people could develop a book trailer and submit it with the winners receiving various prizes.  I entered two of these contests Murder by Moonlight and The Seed (video is no longer available).  In both I was a runner-up and won a signed copy of the book.

So needless to say when it came time to come up with marketing ideas a book trailer was one of the first things I decided to do.  So without further ado, I present the trailer for After The Event!

Self-Publishing – The Covers

Self-Publishing is a series of posts that follows my desperate attempts at developing, writing, and eventually self-publishing my own book.  Follow along if you dare, or if you’re just really bored.

We all know how important a cover can be.  I know the saying don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but I will admit that when I am scrolling through hundreds of books one of the ways I narrow down what I want to check out further is a good looking cover.  I have read great books that have had horrible covers & horrible books with great covers, but the need to stick out is important.

I used the website Fiverr.com

This is a site where everything starts at $5 and you can find someone to do pretty much anything.  I located an individual named Jimmy Gibbs and four days later I had this…

After The Event

And

The Remnants

If you’re looking for someone to design your cover I would recommend this guy.  I gave a brief description of what I wanted, he allowed to pick an image and presto!

With a cover selected for both of my books there was one last thing I wanted to do in order to stand out from the crowd…

Self-Publishing – The Title

Self-Publishing is a series of posts that follows my desperate attempts at developing, writing, and eventually self-publishing my own book.  Follow along if you dare, or if you’re just really bored.

I have been told that the title is nearly as important as the cover when it comes to capturing the attention of a prospective reader, so needless to say I struggled with the title of the 1st book and ultimately the series.

As I was writing the 1st book I had a piece of paper sitting to the side where I would jot down ideas as the story progressed.  Most where lacking, many were already used, and others were just down right dumb.  Ultimately I scribbled one down that I really liked but was certain had been already taken.  Much to my delight once my 1st book was completed I searched and found out that this particular title had not been used.  So the title of the 1st book in the series, which will also be the title of the entire series is……

AFTER THE EVENT

Dun Dun Dunnnnnnn!  🙂

I’m happy with it.  Outside of the prologue the entire book is set after a mysterious event which completely changes the world.

The 2nd book wasn’t nearly as difficult to name…

THE REMNANTS

This is fitting because this book not only examines the nearly deserted state of the world but also the psyche of  a handful of characters who feel left behind.

So the books are completed, the title has been picked, next up is the all important cover!!!

Self-Publishing – How Many Books We Talking Here?

Self-Publishing is a series of posts that follows my desperate attempts at developing, writing, and eventually self-publishing my own book. Follow along if you dare, or if you are just really bored.

I’ve talked previously about the desire to turn my story idea into a series of books but I haven’t delved into how long this series is going to go. I have always been a fan of series because I love a large over-arcing storyline and watching as the characters change over a long period of time. What I DON’T like is when a series goes on for too long. I don’t want to go into specific series because even though I don’t like how a series goes, those writers are much more talented then I am. With that said I’m sure most of you have a series that you followed where it seemed like a book came out where not a whole lot happened.

My goal in determining the amount of books was determining what I needed to happen in the story. As the first book was being outlined I had a specific ending in mind and I knew in order to get to that ending a lot of different things needed to happen. In my series there is more than just a single character so I needed to make sure that I had a place that I wanted each character to be at the end of their storyline. From there it was filling in the blanks.

Now I might make it sound simple enough but in all honesty this process kind of kicked my butt. One of the characters was very easy to plot out a series of events for, the others I struggled with. Not due to a lack of ideas but more-so making these events mean something to the character and making sure they came naturally to the story. This wasn’t a one day process, or even a week/month long process. This is something that is still being revised to this day. I am to the point now where I have a general idea of how long it will take to tell an over arcing story that does all the characters justice and that is…7 books.

7 books seems like a lot and in some ways is & is not.  As I continue to tinker with the later outlines there are things I have added and things I’ve had to modify or remove completely.  With that said I do have a beginning, a semi-clear middle, and a clear ending.  Now I just have to write it…
