Self-Publishing – The Title

Self-Publishing is a series of posts that follows my desperate attempts at developing, writing, and eventually self-publishing my own book.  Follow along if you dare, or if you’re just really bored.

I have been told that the title is nearly as important as the cover when it comes to capturing the attention of a prospective reader, so needless to say I struggled with the title of the 1st book and ultimately the series.

As I was writing the 1st book I had a piece of paper sitting to the side where I would jot down ideas as the story progressed.  Most where lacking, many were already used, and others were just down right dumb.  Ultimately I scribbled one down that I really liked but was certain had been already taken.  Much to my delight once my 1st book was completed I searched and found out that this particular title had not been used.  So the title of the 1st book in the series, which will also be the title of the entire series is……

AFTER THE EVENT

Dun Dun Dunnnnnnn!  🙂

I’m happy with it.  Outside of the prologue the entire book is set after a mysterious event which completely changes the world.

The 2nd book wasn’t nearly as difficult to name…

THE REMNANTS

This is fitting because this book not only examines the nearly deserted state of the world but also the psyche of  a handful of characters who feel left behind.

So the books are completed, the title has been picked, next up is the all important cover!!!

  1. Your titles seem awesome! It makes me curious as to what the event is. The second title is even better.

You know, I had the same problem. I went through so many title iterations for my first book, but I got my second, third, and fourth all in one shot.

I wonder if it’s a common theme because the first one is more of our baby and the others are like “meh second novel.” Thinking about it now, I had a lot of trouble in my first series with the first title but the second and third were easy peasy.

  2. I like that theory!
The first title is not only setting the tone for the 1st book but for the entire series, so it has to be JUST right. 😉
    Appreciate the support!

  3. Congrats! Those are good, strong titles (I’m jealous). I loathe coming up with titles, but have found picking a few titles and then posting a poll helps me narrow down (and refine) my options.
